Abstract

Gel lanthanum phosphate was prepared using various kinds of phosphates, lanthanum compounds and pH adjustment reagents. To obtain the gel phosphate, orthophosphates with sodium, potassium, and ammonium cations, and lanthanum nitrate were used. The particle shape obtained in the preparation process was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Obtaining a transparent solution by mixing the ingredients for 3 h was an important condition to form gel lanthanum phosphate. The phosphates thus obtained were analysed using X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The fluorescence of the gels was investigated by substituting a part of the lanthanum cations with cerium cations. Lanthanum-cerium phosphate gels prepared at pH 10 with a Ce/La cation ratio of 10:90 exhibited bluish-purple fluorescence.
