Abstract

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), also called ambient temperature molten salts, have been demonstrated to be potentially useful for a wide variety of chemical and electrochemical functions, ranging from power source electrolytes to alternative solvents for chemical synthesis. We will report on recent work on a materials application of RTILs in which a functionally graded, corrosion-resistant coating for the interior of hot ferrous metal pipes was prepared using precursors derived from an ambient temperature chloroaluminate melt.
