Abstract

Ferrimagnetic BaFe12O19 and SrFe12O19 were prepared from BaSO4 and from SrSO4 by heating the sulfates in mixtures with Fe2O3 and Na2CO3 to 900–1400 °C. The highest yields were obtained from mixtures containing 6 moles of Fe2O3 and 1 mole of Na2CO3 per mole of sulfate. Similar results were observed when Na2CO3 was substituted with compounds yielding oxides of sodium, potassium, or calcium but not with analogous lithium compounds.
