Abstract

A solidification technique is described for preparing flat metallic single crystals of hexagonal structure. Their examination by transmission X-ray topography shows that cadmium and zinc specimens can be obtained with a very low density of dislocations. Magnesium crystals can also be prepared, but of a lower quality. A study of the origins of the dislocations during crystallisation from the melt accounts for the experimental results.
