Abstract

In this paper the spectroscopic and fluorescence properties of several Nd3+-doped fluoride glasses were studied by experimental measurement and calculation using the Judd-Ofelt theoretical model. It is shown that the fluorescence properties of Nd3+ ions in the fluorozirconate glass are better than that in the fluoroaluminate glass and the fluorophosphate glass, and are further improved by the substitution of NaCl for NaF. A Nd3+-doped fluorozirconate glass fiber with a core diameter of 9 μm was prepared, and some laser properties of the fiber were measured using a Fabry-Perot cavity by pumping with a 514 nm Ar laser. A 1.05 μm CW laser with output power of 11 mW and slope efficiency of 20% at room temperature was observed.
