Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate and barium sulfate scales which are common but unwanted crystalline products in the production of oil from off-shore rigs. A multifunctional antiscalant APES/AA/AMPS was prepared by reaction of acrylic acid, ammonium allylpolyethoxy sulphate and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-propanesulfonic acid with different molar ratios. The experimental results showed that the polymer has high performance towards scales, nearly 90 % for CaCO3 and 87 % for BaSO4 respectively by static scale inhibition tests. The crystals of scales were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. According to the changes of the crystal shape, size and morphology, the inhibition mechanisms of complexation and adsorption between the inhibitor and the crystal surface were proposed.
