Abstract

Carbon adsorbents were modified with microamounts (0.002–0.1 wt %) of fullerenes, silver, and dyes with the aim of enhancing the performance of adsorbents intended for suppression of toxic microflora in aqueous medium. Treatment of aqueous medium with the adsorbent modified with fullerenes and Brilliant Green dye decreases the content of E. coli microorganisms by 96 and 95%, respectively, whereas the silver-modified adsorbent decreases their content by only 90%. Furthermore, the amount of fullerenes and dyes used for the modification is 10–50 times smaller than the required amount of silver.
