Abstract

Nylon-6(N6)/lysine(Lys) composite films were prepared. N6 films containing 30 wt% of lysine hydrochloride were cast from formic acid solution and allowed to react with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) in xylene. The treatment crosslinked the films as shown by increased insolubility in formic acid. Melting point and thermal stability of the films decreased as a result of HMDI treatment. Moisture regain increased and acid dye uptake increased remarkably, whereas water absorption decreased with increasing gain in film weight. HMDI treatment had little effect on tensile strength; Young's modulus increased and elongation decreased. N6/Lys composite films showed larger weight loss after treatment with alkali, suggesting biodegradability.
