Abstract

ABSTRACT Polyethylene (PE) is widely used in the electrical insulation systems because of its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. However, space charge will accumulate in insulating materials and cause electrical field distortion under high voltage. Linear low density polyethylene/linear low density polyethylene grafted polystyrene/polystyrene coated magnesium oxide (LLDPE/LLDPE-g-PS/MgO@PS) nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending. The morphology, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of LLDPE/LLDPE-g-PS/MgO@PS nanocomposites were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the MgO@PS nanoparticles were well dispersed in the matrix, and the direct current breakdown strength was increased about 51.7% when 2.0 wt % MgO@PS added.
