Abstract

Abstract This paper described the preparation of lepidocrocites (γ-FeOOH) via the photocatalytic oxidation of Fe(II) in the presence of trace citric acid under visible light irradiation. The experimental results showed that different crystallized lepidocrocites were obtained by controlling the concentrations of citric acid under visible light irradiation. The crystallization of lepidocrocite was found to gradually decrease with increase in the concentration of citric acid. During the γ-FeOOH formation, the Fe(II)-citrate complex could absorb light in the visible regions and produce oxidizing species, leading to the acceleration of the oxidation rate. The higher oxidation rate was favorable for the formation of low-crystalline γ-FeOOH. The as-prepared low-crystalline γ-FeOOH was easily dissolved in aqueous solution, which exhibited higher efficiency for the degradation of orange II by homogeneous photo-Fenton reaction, and the low-crystalline γ-FeOOH had large specific surface area, which showed higher adsorption and photocatalytic activity toward the photodegradation of orange II by heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction.
