Abstract

ABSTRACT A new series of glassy chiral-nematic liquid crystals P-ChxNy , were synthesised by hydrosilylation reaction of chiral mesogenic monomer Ch and nematic monomer N grafted onto polymethylhydrosiloxane. The mesomorphic properties, phase behaviour and selective reflection were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM), and UV-VIS spectrum. Both the Tg and Tc gradually increased as the amount of unit Ch in the copolymer increased. A series of morphologically stable, glassy chiral-nematic liquid crystals were obtained. Among these copolymers, the well-oriented glassy film of the polymer P-Ch4N3 exhibited a selective reflection band centred at approximately 532 nm with green reflected colour below Tg .
