Abstract

We report on the preparation, structure, and optical and magneto-optical properties of the NaCl-type SmSe and SmTe films, as well as the chalcogen-rich compounds crystallizing in a bcc Th3P4-type structure. Magnetic circular dichroism has been used to help in resolving the absorption spectra as well as to ascertain the singlet nature of the ground state of SmSe and SmTe; the presence of Sm3+ is thus ruled out in these materials. The two absorption peaks observed at 1.2 and 2 eV for SmTe and 1.03 and 1.85 eV for SmSe are identified as transitions arising from 4f6(7F)→4f5(6H)5 d(t2g) and 4f6(7F)→4f5(6F)5 d(t2g), respectively.
