Abstract

Ti–6Al–4V pre-alloyed powder was produced by a gas atomisation process and fully dense powder metallurgy Ti–6Al–4V alloy was prepared by hot isostatic pressing. Tensile properties of powder metallurgy powder compact compared with those of typical cast and wrought alloys under various heat treatments were investigated. The results show that tensile properties of powder metallurgy Ti–6Al–4V alloy are better than those of as-cast alloy, and comparable with those of wrought alloy. The tensile strength of powder metallurgy alloy varies more slightly with the cooling rate compared with cast/wrought alloys. Electron beam welding was used to join the powder metallurgy Ti–6Al–4V plates. It indicated that the welding joint shows high metallurgy quality and excellent mechanical performance.
