Abstract

Anionically polymerized poly(2-vinylpyridine) was successfully quaternized with dimethyl sulfate in dimethylformamide at room temperature without degradation and coloring to prepare poly(N-methyl-2-vinylpyridinum chloride) (PMVP-Cl) with narrow molecular weight distributions. It was found that the intrinsic viscosity of PMVP-Cl in NaCl solutions agrees with the Stockmayer-Fixman equation except for high molecular weight samples at low ionic strengths, and the cubic of the expansion factor due to electrostatic repulsion obtained from intrinsic viscosity αη3 is expressed as a linear function of (M/Cs)1/2 as reported for poly(sodium acrylate).
