Abstract
α-MoTe 2 undergoes a phase transition at 660°C to β-MoTe 2−x. Although high quality crystals of stoichiometric α-MoTe 2 could not be grown directly, good mixed phase crystals of α-MoTe 2 and β-MoTe 2−x were obtained by chemical vapor transport. These as-grown mixed phase crystals showed metallic behavior. They were converted to single phase, stoichiometric, α-MoTe 2 crystals by subsequent annealing at 650°C in the presence of excess tellurium vapor.
