Abstract

In this paper, polythiophene–graphene oxide (PTh–GO) hybrids-filled epoxy (0–2 wt%) coatings with enhanced mechanical and anti-corrosion properties applied as an advanced coating. The chemical structure, morphology, toughness, adhesion to the substrate and anticorrosive properties of these coatings were studied. FTIR analysis and morphological investigations (XRD, SEM and TEM) confirmed that PTh synthesized in the presence of GO and PTh nanoparticles located on the surface of GO and exfoliated structure were obtained. Potentiodynamic polarization, EIS and OCP analysis confirmed better anti-corrosion properties of PTh–GO hybrids-filled epoxy coatings than neat epoxy and GO- or PTh-filled epoxy. Adhesion analysis results demonstrated that epoxy/PTh–GO nanocomposites better adhesion to the mild steel and only 5% of the coating was removed during analysis. Izod test shows that addition of 0.5 wt% PTh–GO to epoxy lead to 61% improvement of impact strength of epoxy coating.
