Abstract

Pectin is a natural, renewable and sustainable biopolymer. However, the insolubility of pectin in organic solvents and inability to form stable hydrogels limit its applications. This thesis reported various chemical modifications of pectin in order to overcome the limitations of pectin. Through these chemical modifications, new functionalities were bestowed on hybrid pectin-based materials, enhancing their utilities in a wide array of applications.
