Abstract
Five new polymeric Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS) have been prepared by radical copolymerization of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl methacrylate(MTMP) with styrene(St), acrylonitrile(AN), acrylamide(AAm), vinylacetate(VAc) and 2-vinylpyridine(VP). The structure, self-thermostability, extraction resistance, solubility parameters, molecular weight, photoprotecting mechanism and stabilizing effectiveness of these polymeric HALS were characterized by IR, NMR, ESR, TGA, elemental analysis and VPO. The results show that the photoprotecting effectiveness of the copolymers is in the order VAc-MTMP > St-MTMP > AN-MTMP > AAm-MTMP > VP-MTMP , and the thermo-protecting effectiveness of the copolymers is in the order VAc-MTMP > St-MTMP > VP-MTMP > AN-MTMP > AAm-MTMP. The thermostability of the five polymeric HALS is over 280°C and the extraction resistance is excellent for all the polymeric HALS. The relationship between molecular structure and photoprotecting effectiveness of polymeric HALS was discussed.
