Abstract

A novel sol–gel method was used to synthesize homogeneous and nanosized (1−x)BiScO3−xPbTiO3 ceramic powders. During the processing for preparing the sol, the pH value must be strictly controlled to avoid precipitates. Ethylene glycol (EG) or polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added separately to stabilize the sol, and the effects of EG and PEG addition were investigated by using the infrared spectral absorption method. Nano‐ceramic powders can be obtained by calcining the dried gel at 550°–800°C for 2–8 h. The average grain size for the powder calcined at 600°C for 3 h was about 10 nm determined by transmission electron microscope and X‐ray diffraction. The sintering temperature and electrical properties of the ceramics derived by nano‐powders were compared with those prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The result shows that using the nanopowder, the sintering temperature could be reduced from 1100° to 1000°C, and the electrical properties were enhanced.
