Abstract

The glass-forming region in the AIN-Li2O–SiO2 ternary was defined, and glass batches up to 15 g were prepared and characterized. Thermogravimetric data on thermal decomposition were interpreted in terms of probable decomposition reactions. Crystalline phases identified in partly crystalline and devitrified glasses include α′- and β′-sialons, eucryptite, and τ-LiAlO2, all of which may contain some substituted N. Micro-hardness and elastic modulus of a glass of approximate composition Li2Si2AlO5N are both considerably higher than values for similar oxide glasses.
