Abstract

A novel sulphur-containing bispthalazine biphenol monomer was prepared in high yields by the reaction of 4-mercaphophenoxy-4-benzenethiol with chlorophthalazine compound. High-molecular-weight poly(arylene thioether) was synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution reaction between the sulphur-containing monomer and activated difluoro aromatic compound. The polymer showed high glass-transition temperature (226°C) and the thermal stability showed no significant weight loss below 390°C. The polymer was soluble in dipolar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide. The soluble polymer could be cast into flexible film from solution.
