Abstract

Abstract A number of 2-substituted isatogens are shown to possess moderate in vitro antibacterial properties. The syntheses of closely related compounds in the pyrrolo-[2,3-c]pyridine and pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyridine series are described. Antibacterial activities of these compounds, of the structurally similar indolones, N-hydroxy-indoles, indoxyls and indoles are recorded, together with those of certain styryl compounds required as intermediates.
