The prohormone (proBNP) splits into the inactive N-terminal peptide (NT-proBNP) and the active hormone BNP, which decreases systemic vascular resistance and central venous pressure and increases natriuresis. Elevated BNP may be detected in patients with noncardiac conditions, such as renal failure
