Abstract

Surgical treatment for carcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia always involves major operations bearing considerable risk, and the patients are usually elderly and in poor general condition. There is high operative mortality if the patients are not properly cared for. It is for these reasons that preoperative and postoperative care and the prevention and management of postoperative complications are just as important as the handling of surgical indications and operative techniques. Doctors and nurses in charge of surgical patients should be fully conversant with the relevant principles and techniques of management and apply them to the best of their knowledge with regard to the individual condition of the patient. It is only through meticulous attention to the details of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management that morbidity and mortality can be reduced.
