Abstract

Sex-specific physical and behavioral manifestations of puberty occur in large part as a consequence of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis activation. While animal studies have pointed to a potential role of prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) in programming the fetal HPG axis, so far it is unclear if and to what degree PNMS may disrupt the structural integrity of the HPG axis in humans.
