Abstract

Abstract
Why do some women spend 2 h applying beauty products? The objective of this research was to study the impact of variations in prenatal hormones on beauty rituals and cosmetics sensory preferences among women. The experimental group comprised 16 women aged 25–35 years with no known health disorders. Subjects reported the complexity (in number of steps) and precision (sequence) of their beauty and makeup rituals. Physiological measurements (digit ratio for prenatal hormones, skin type, vision), and sensory preferences (in terms of texture, packaging, aspect, and ingredients) were collected together with lifestyle, microbiome and nutrition-related observations. Women with a complex and precise make-up ritual (of 10 steps and more) presented higher levels of prenatal testosterone and beauty ritual drivers related to symmetry, counting, and perfectionism. Prenatal hormones seem to have an influence on the time spent on beauty rituals and could be associated with a form of beauty obsessive compulsive disorder.
