Abstract

VACTERL association is a nonrandom association of the fetal anomalies vertebral defects, imperforate anus, cardiac abnormalities, tracheoesophageal fistula, and renal and limb defects.1–3 Urogenital anomalies include hydronephrosis, horseshoe kidney, ectopic kidney, renal dysplasia or agenesis, urolithiasis and vesicoureteral reflux.4, 5 The etiology is unknown but defects to the mesodermal part of the embryo before the 35 days of gestation may lead to this association.6 It is a disorder that generally occurs sporadically with a low incidence of associated chromosomal abnormalities.1 VACTERL association is not uniformly fatal with survival reported to be 100%.7, 8 However, survivors require significant surgical treatment and care. Prenatal diagnosis may assist in proper planning for delivery and anticipated care of the neonate. Ultrasonography has been shown to help provide prenatal diagnosis of fetal structural abnormalities.9, 10 We report a case in which VACTERL was diagnosed prenatally with the presence of hemivertebrae, ventricular septal defect and a solitary pelvic kidney.
