Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: We present three women with gamm a- Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) dependence who lose control over their GHB consumption during the premenstrual period. During the late luteal phase, they relapsed into GHB use, but returned to abstinence at the beginning of the menstrual cycle. Methods: During inpatient detox they did not relapsed to GHB but they had high craving during each cycle We have measured these in two cycles. The severity of premenstrual complaints appears to be associated with GHB craving. Results: These cases illustrate that substance use may be related to the symptoms of premenstrual disorders. Conclusion: Therefore, addiction medicine specialists, family physicians and gynecologists should be aware of this possible relationship. Unfortunately, at present there are no guidelines for the treatment of this co-occurring disorder, however we provide some suggestions regarding how to reduce the risk of relapse in the late luteal phase.
