Abstract

Abstract Sixty male black rats were used to study histology of reproductive system and hormonal analyses at different ages from birth to puberty and maturity. The testes descended from the abdomen into scrotum between 30–35 days. The age at puberty was around 45–50 days taking preputial separation as an index. The age of sexual maturity was 60 days as manifested by the appearance of motile spermatozoa in the caput epididymis. Histological study of the testes indicated that the diameter of seminiferous tubules, the number of Leydig cells and cell layers were significantly increased with the advancement of age till puberty. Hormonal levels of serum interstitial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone were low in the first twenty days and increased upto 30 days.
