Abstract

Abstract Wintering Steller's Eider has been studied at Lithuanian coast, aiming to evaluate ecology aspects of these birds and assess conservation priorities for this globally threatened species. Steller's Eider exploited a very small inshore area characterised as having complex benthic communities and spent a considerable part of the day foraging there. Birds demonstrated a clearly distinguished group living and feeding strategy. Presently, the highest potential danger to wintering Steller's Eider is represented by rapid development of oil industry and inshore gill net fishing.
