Abstract
This study is part of a larger research project, aimed at analyzing and comparing rejections within a corpus of emails and private Facebook messages among three groups of informants: natives speakers of Peninsular Spanish, native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese and Brazilian students of Spanish as a foreign language. The partial results presented here correspond to the piloting data of the study, carried out with the informants of the first two groups. Specifically, we provide a taxonomy of external modifiers present in rejections with different degrees of imposition, relational power, and social distance. Likewise, we analyze the use of these modifiers by Brazilian and Spanish native informants.

Resumen Este artículo presenta un estudio preliminar de los modificadores externos presentes en rechazos elaborados por 20 hablantes nativos de portugués brasileño y 20 de español peninsular. Se ha aplicado un cuestionario tipo Discourse Completion Task (DCT) con dieciséis situaciones de la esfera académica a las que los informantes debían responder mediante un correo electrónico o un mensaje privado de Facebook. En rechazos con un alto grado de imposición, tanto brasileños como españoles agradecen más cuando el destinatario es desconocido. Las excusas aparecen con mayor frecuencia al aumentar la confianza. Cabe destacar el empleo de las disculpas en situaciones con alto grado de imposición y un mayor ofrecimiento de propuestas compensatorias y, sobre todo, alternativas por parte de los informantes españoles, especialmente con destinatarios de confianza.
