Abstract

Objectives
Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) are a diverse group of uncommon neoplasms that are rare in pediatric patients. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinicopathologic profile of pediatric patients affected by SGTs.
Study Design
We retrospectively analyzed the cases of SGTs in children and adolescents (0-19 years old) diagnosed between 2000 and 2020, for a total of 114 cases. Patients' clinical data were obtained from medical records. The lesions were classified according to the 2017 World Health Organization criteria. Quantitative analysis of the data was performed using SPSS.
Results
The lesions were more prevalent in females (54.4%), the average age was 13.6 years, and 60.5% were over 14 years old. The palate was the most affected site (62.3%), followed by 11.4% in the lip and 8.8% in the parotid. In addition, 26% had painful symptoms. Most cases were benign tumors, 70.2% were pleomorphic adenoma, and 19.3% were mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
Conclusions
In parallel with previous studies, we found that pediatric STGs have a higher frequency of benign and nonmalignant tumors.
