Abstract

Abstract During the 1990 season the excavation of two areas begun in 1989 at Tell Iktanu (Area A13 and Area C3), and two new EB.MB areas (A14 and A15) was completed. A complete survey of the western half of the lower tell at Tell al-Hammam was undertaken, and parts of the Early Bronze Age settlement were excavated. Observations by A. Mallon are combined with present survey work including aerial photographs to indicate that the lower Early Bronze Age town at Hammam was fortified, covered an area of c. 10·2 hectares and that the upper tell probably formed an additional acropolis. The site was also settled in Phase 1 of the EB.MB period. Most of the visible wall foundations on the lower tell probably date to the Early Bronze Age and the Intermediate Early Bronze–Middle Bronze Age.
