Abstract

Consultations held between the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) and the Cape Breton Laboratory of the CANMET Coal Research Laboratories (CBCRL) have identified the problem of leakage of intake air through longwall wastes (gobs) as a major problem in the safe operation of advancing longwall coalfaces. A joint study of the problem was initiated and is currently in progress. It comprises three phases; a review of the effect of previous attempts to control gob leakage, a Department of Supply and Services contract to assess the suitability of gateroad sealants, and underground investigations into the nature and extent of the problem. This report reviews progress to date in the three phases of the study, and presents a series of recommendations with particular reference to the immediate production schedules at the Lingan Colliery.
