Abstract
It is the purpose of this paper to report an outbreak of streptococcic disease that occurred at Keesler Field, Mississippi, a large Army Air Forces training center, during the winter of 1944-45. This outbreak was produced by a sulfadiazine resistant strain of Group A, Type 17 hemolytic streptococcus. It is believed that this is the first example of such an occurrence to be reported. It was possible to study the epidemic in considerable detail. An Army Air Forces Rheumatic Fever Control Program laboratory had been established at the field for a survey of hemolytic streptococci in a supposedly low incidence area. This laboratory had been equipped and staffed to perform streptococcus grouping and typings on a large scale.
