Abstract

THE South African hominid sites have proved difficult to date since radiometric and fission track methods have yielded no results, and faunal and geomorphological methods provide only wide limits. We describe here preliminary palaeomagnetic results which suggest that polarity stratigraphy can be used at these sites, and which indicate an age of between 2.8 and 3.3 Myr for Member 2 of the Makapansgat Formation.
