Abstract

The Bandung Groundwater Basin (BGB) and the city of Bandung above it are located approximately 10–15 km south of the Lembang Fault, which has a rupture length of approximately 29 km extending east–west. The Lembang Fault is an active fault with a slip rate of 3.0–6.0 mm per year. This has prompted concern that it will one day cause an earthquake that experts estimate can reach magnitudes of 6.0 to 7.0 Mw and a maximum ground acceleration of 0.2 to 0.4 g. As the location is less than one times the rupture length, the BGB and Bandung are considered to be located within the near field of the epicentre, so they are highly vulnerable to significant impacts, such as soil liquefaction and other hydrologic changes. This paper presents a preliminary evaluation of the potential impact of an earthquake generated by the Lembang Fault on the deep groundwater response in the BGB. This preliminary evaluation can be used to complement deeper and more detailed future evaluations.
