Abstract

The separation capability of charged particles is one of the most important requirements for direct energy converters (DEC) of D-He fusion reactors. The time-dependent axisymmetric two-dimensional analyses have been carried out. (1) The ion collector and the electron collector must be placed closer to the center of the DEC to reduce the self-induced electric field which deteriorates the performance of the DEC. (2) The length of z-direction of the DEC is also important and should be shorten, resulting in a good performance even in a commercial scale DEC with 250MW thermal input. (3) It has also been found that the radius of the charged particles beams has large effects on the separation capability and an adequate radius is required.
