Abstract
ABSTRACTA system of prehistoric trails is associated with the trincheras complex on Tumamoc Hill. It includes a rock-bordered “main trail” leading through the summit walls and down the north face toward the St. Mary's site (AZ AA: 16:26). The prehistoric date of this “main trail” is confirmed by sherd density counts. Subsidiary trails lead from the summit complex to work areas on saddles and ridges. Analysis of the trails in relation to sherds and other features indicates that the slopes and summit were used from the late Colonial through early Classic periods. The main trail, however, probably dates from Rillito-Rincon times and was designed to link the St. Mary's site to the hilltop. This is consistent with the trail placement and a Rillito (or Rincon?) painted sherd found along the trail. These results alone would suggest that the walls themselves may also date from the Rillito-Rincon period, which is earlier than previously suggested (Larson 1972:95).
