Abstract
It is inevitable that some pregnant women will commit offences which are punishable by imprisonment, it is inevitable that some mothers of young dependent children will face imprisonment. In sentencing, the court is not only sentencing the mother and the fetus, but also the youngsters dependent on that mother. What rights do they have? In what way does the prison service provide adequate care of the mother's maternity needs?
