Abstract

The pregnane X receptor, PXR, is a member of the nuclear receptor family of ligand-activated transcription factors [1]. The hormones that act through the nuclear receptors include the steroid hormones, thyroid hormone, retinoic acid, and vitamin D [2]. They are all small, lipophilic molecules that diffuse into the cell and interact with their cognate receptors. The receptors bind to DNA and regulate gene transcription directly. There are 48 nuclear receptors in the human genome that share structural features, including conserved DNA binding and ligand binding domains.
