Abstract

57Fe Mössbauer measurements of Y 2Fe 17−xM x compounds, with M = Al, Ga or Si, χ = 1 and 2, have been performed at room temperature. Analysis of calculated and experimentally obtained relative intensities in the frame of structural and magnetic data evidences a preferential substitution of Fe(12k) sites by the nonmagnetic M atoms. This effect is consistent with the previously reported coexistence of a lattice expansion or contraction and an enhancement in Curie temperature of R 2Fe 17 compounds, with iron substituted by different types of atoms.
