Abstract
Hybrid systems have always existed in the computer world. Whether in industrial data centers, national laboratories, or peoples' garages from spare parts, they have generally been the best way to get optimal performance on specialized applications. Now, due to a variety of technical challenges facing the industry, we are poised to see a dramatic growth in the importance of application-driven designs and a corresponding increase in the importance of hybrid systems.
