Abstract

The positive and significative contribution of oil palm plantations to the development of the Indonesian economy (through increasing foreign exchange earnings, employment and other multiplier effects) has drawn many negative accusations in environmental aspects (as causes of deforestation, degradation of biodiversity, fires, sources of emissions and other) from certain parties, so that it becomes a polemic in the public space. In connection with this and encouraged by the enthusiasm to achieve "sustainable and environmentally friendly oil palm plantation management", Faculty of Forestry IPB in collaboration with the Center for Nature Study, Advocacy and Conservation (PUSAKA KALAM) and CIRAD France consider it necessary to invite experts/specialist from various parts the world and the archipelago and are multi-disciplinary to discuss objectively and scientifically about the “impact of Indonesian oil palm plantations on the physical/chemical components, biodiversity and socio-economic diversity of the surrounding communities".
