Abstract

The International Conference on “Cell Death in Cancer and Toxicology” was conceptualized and organized jointly by CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and International Cell Death Society at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow, India from February 20–22, 2018. Cell death is an integral part of cellular homeostasis in living system. Alteration in cell death process has been −associated with various patho-physiological conditions including cellular toxicity and cancer. Abnormal cell proliferation and defective cell death are key reasons for aggressive cancer and treatment resistance. Although apoptosis is a key cell death program, discovery of various types of programmed cell death mechanism has provided alternative −approaches to develop novel anticancer strategies where conventional pathway of apoptosis fails to respond. Therefore, elimination of cancer cells by inducing cell death is one the prime targets for current therapeutic strategies. However, selective killing of cancer cells is still limited in clinical settings and an ongoing part of intense research worldwide. This meeting brought together scientists and researchers from diverse disciplines working across the globe with a goal of understanding cell death and its implications in cancer biology and toxicology. The meeting provided a platform to scientists and young researchers showcasing their novel findings in the areas of cell death in the context of cancer and toxicology. The meeting provided a unique platform for connecting people to initiate new collaborations and a forum for interaction among scientists, scholars, clinicians and pharmaceutical industry working across the globe. The Conference included a full range of academic sessions including one plenary lecture and 12 preferred sessions. The event had 77 talks by invited eminent speakers from national and international research institutes, universities, −academia and industry. The meeting showcased 80 posters and 16 oral presentations where young researchers to presented their research and seek feedback from the experts in the field. We thank the contributors for their valuable inputs and Cancer Medicine for giving us the opportunity as Guest Editors of this special issue comprising the abstracts of different talks and posters presented in the conference. We sincerely appreciate the generous support provided by the Council of Scientific & industrial Research, India; Science & Engineering Research Board, India; Department of Science & Technology, India; Indian Council of Medical research, India; Council of Science & Technology, U.P., India and Defence Research and Development Organization, India for their financial support.
