Abstract

Aesthetic facial reconstruction is an exciting area that speaks to everyone's imagination. The combination of increased anatomic knowledge and the concept of aesthetic facial units and subunits has made it possible over time to enhance reconstructive outcomes. We can continue improvement of our outcomes, building on the knowledge and solutions from creative surgeons who faced similar reconstructive challenges before us.This issue of Clinics in Plastic Surgery tries to give a comprehensive overview of aesthetic facial reconstruction. I am grateful and honored to be given the opportunity to host this issue. Experts in aesthetic facial reconstruction from around the globe have put in their time to share with us their wealth of knowledge. The result of all their efforts is worthwhile. A comprehensive update on the current practice of surgical and nonsurgical treatments for skin cancer gives a perspective on possible causes of facial defects. The different aesthetic units and subunits that are involved in facial reconstruction are reviewed in separate articles. The basic principles are systematically presented, interwoven with many pearls to improve one's aesthetic reconstructive outcomes.
