He received his B.A. in education from Shimane University in 1962 and studied linguistics and anthropology at Indiana University, where he received his Ph.D. in anthropology in 1974. He is now associate professor of linguistics and anthropology at the University of Kansas. His major research interests are: American Indian linguistics, Japanese linguistics, sociolinguistics, culture theory, anthropology of education and biIinguaVbicultural education.
