Abstract
Besides being the ninetieth anniversary of the first edition of The Souls of Black Folk, 1993 is the one-hundred-and-twenty-fifth anniversary of Du Bois's birth. This preface to the book appeared in the fiftieth anniversary edition under the title, "Fifty Years After." (New York: Blue Heron Press, 1953) Although we have not made an exhaustive search, the preface was absent from the subsequent editions we were able to consult. Perhaps this is not so strange, considering its final paragraphs. Copies of Du Bois's The Education of Black People (1973) are available from Monthly Review Press, for $10 a copy. —The EditorsThis article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
