Abstract

The statistical theory of nuclear reactions is applied to explain the strong tendency for protons to be transferred out of the projectile when heavy targets are bombarded by moderately heavy projectiles. The predictions of the theory for the relative probability of stripping to pickup reactions agree in general with the experimental data, and the degree of agreement increases with increasing number of transferred nucleons.
