Abstract

The main objective of this contribution is to explore the concept of prepositional phraseol- ogisms (phrasemes) and compare them as a closely related subclass with other phraseologisms. The comparison is conducted in a German-Serbian contrast using text material from Peter Handke’s novel “Der kurze Brief zum langen Abschied” (The short letter for the long farewell) (T1) and its translation into Serbian (T2). This phraseological type is not language-specific; it exists in both languages in the form of Subtype A (Preposition/ Prepositional Phrase) or “prepositional phraseologism” and Subtype B (Prepositional Phrase/ Adverb) in an adver- bial function, hence the term adverbial phraseologism. Subtype B appears to be somewhat more productive than Subtype A; however, both the author (Peter Handke) and the translator (Žarko Radaković) had limited choices.
